Liner notes

This is the third part in a four-part compilation series to give you a deeper insight into the philosophy behind FAX and ist related labels, and to look back on what has happened over the past 20 years.
After we watched the plants grow during summer, watered and weeded them, there was a great harvest.

With the extreme positive feedback by the beginning of the 1990s, I was able to proceed in any musical direction I wanted. I moved from Frankfurt am Main to a bigger space in the middle of a small town called Traben-Trarbach. My studio grew from 13 square meters to 40 square meters and quality of the new studio can be heard in the music I produced from 1997 onwards.

The second and third installments of “From Within“ with Richie Hawtin was a great deal of fun. “Psychonavigation“ I continued to create with elements sent by Bill. Also I stopped playing live as it took time away from my studio work. The live environment was inspiring for spontaneous composition but on the other hand it was not so easy to create more intense and innovative music in the moment during a show. To me it was important to improve my compositions and sound with every release. This was only possible in the studio environment.

Geir Jenssen came to Traben-Trarbach for our next “The Fires of Ork“ and to his surprise it was easier to work together in a spontaneous way in the studio than he expected. Neither of us had been prepared and we co-composed our way through the excellent album “The Fires of Ork 2“.

“Koolfang“ was created in a similar way and you can always hear the difference between “Koolfang“ and the “Move D · Namlook“ releases. “Move D · Namlook“ is generally a live recording within a studio environment. From time to time, David and I would meet in the spring and make music for an afternoon. This session would then be edited and refined by David while I would do the Surround Mix and the Mastering.

“Sultan“ is one of the projects that I really wanted to do. I have been into Oriental Music since I was 17 years old. In my mid twenties I played at Turkish weddings (sometimes with as many as 1500 guests) as the only German in a Turkish band. I enjoyed this immensely and even in my “Jazz-Rock/Fusion“ times I always performed some Oriental tracks live. During the time of the “harvest“ I wanted to use my connections to search for a great Asian multi-instrumentalist and of course I found Burhan Öçal. He is the most charismatic and versatile Oriental musician I have ever met and I am very proud that we collaborated on some extraordinary releases, each of which have been a lot of fun and the outmost work I ever had to put into a production…dedicated to my deep affection for Oriental music.

“New Organic Life“ was one of the musical directions that I took the freedom to create in the realm of granular synthesis. Normally this direction is strictly mathematical and academic, but I wanted to give it an organic profoundness. The tonal information in one second exceeds partly a whole “normal“ song and when you listen to it at a higher volume, it might happen that it takes control of your brain ;-).

Klaus Schulze and I worked intensely on “The Dark Side of the Moog“ and “The Final DAT“ is a good example of all the aspects of our collaboration. Sequencing, drumming, solos and innovative sounds form what I intended to be the 70s “Space Music“ transported into the 90s.
Working with some elements that I had received from Bill for “Psychonavigation 5“ and “Outland 5“, I experimented a lot with innovatively looped and macro controlled drumming in combination with Scifi samples and some orchestral-oriented sounds.

We had the pleasure to be part of the trance movement in the early 90s, but once the movement had transformed into a silly and mostly inelegant style, I no longer wanted be part of it. I therefore transformed 4Voice from the most successful hard trance project of FAX into a more timeless style.

Technical note:

The tracks have been gently remastered, but I wanted them to be authentic…creating adn producing musuc, as well as sowing and cultivating plants, is an ongoing learning process and I am glad that I have learned a lot between 1992 and today…;-)
